The day is finally here! Part 1 of After Canada Reads is up and ready for your ears! What titles made it through the first and second rounds of debate and voting? What titles were eliminated? Stop asking all of these questions and just listen to it.

I had to laugh when I heard which character Tania was defending from Fifth Business. I’ve been trying to get it read in time to listen to this, but I’m still not quite done, and I only just got to Liesl in the chapter I read this morning – so it surprised me. All along I assumed it was going to be Mrs. Dempster, and I’ve been wondering what more Mrs. D was going to do in this book. Now I’ll be paying close attention to Liesl! I do admire your unpredictable choice of character to defend!
It’s also funny how everyone just ends up talking about how the questions Kirt is asking aren’t really all that important as reasons to vote for or against a character. Maybe each panelist should come up with a question they think is relevant? I know it’s probably too late for this year, but I’m hoping you’ll decide to do this again!
Is it as much work as I imagine it would be?
I’ll let Tania talk about her character choice, but Ii wanted to thank you for the suggestion about the debate questions. That is an excellent idea. The only thing that would be tricky would be trying to avoid leading questions tailored specifically for the book being defended.
It was quite a bit of work but that was mostly because I worked hard instead of working smart. The actual recording session was such a good time, though. It made everything worth it. The next time we do it , the process will be more streamlined. We probably won’t be restricting our panelists to just Edmonton too (there’s a good chance I won’t be in Edmonton at that time). Skyping in panelists will be a whole new kettle of fish, I guess, but at least I won’t have to clean my apartment. 🙂 – Kirt
I’m glad to hear it was a fun time! If it becomes a thing, you’ll eventually have all the wrinkles worked out. And not having to clean your apartment is a huge bonus – think of all the extra time you’ll have to work on your hosting duties instead! 🙂
