#KayDay!

Kay_Guy_GavrielToday is Kay Day over at Penguin Books, a day that celebrates the body of work of one of Canada’s preeminent fantasy authors. We not only dedicated an entire podcast to discussing his novel Tigana, but he has also come up in several of our discussions in other podcasts. Tania is an ardent fan, and Kirt enjoyed Tigana so much that his To Do list now includes reading more of Kay’s work (and it won him over to the fantasy genre). So, we salute Guy Gavriel Kay, and all of the Canadian authors who have contributed to Write Reads (without whom all of our podcasts would consist of Buffy references).

Tania’s attempt at a Kay Day selfie. It’s a wonder no one has spotted and made use of her obvious photography skillz before now. KayDay

It’s true, we would just be quoting Buffy and giggling to ourselves if there weren’t the awesome books to talk about 🙂 – Tania

I haven’t read anything by GGK, but this will be the year it happens. But where should I start? I have River of Stars on my list. Is this a good choice?

I haven’t read that one either, tsk tsk on me. But I’ve heard it is amazing and I’m sure you can start anywhere with his books. I think you start with the book of his that covers the area of history you are most interested in (there is pretty much something for everyone) and go from there. Many people start with either Tigana (Italian history) or The Lions of El-Rassan (Spanish history) and I’d say they are both excellent examples of how he weaves history into a magical thing.
