November 2012 Book Pick – The Little Shadows by Marina Endicott

Thank you for listening to our first podcast. We have every confidence that we’ll blunder less and excel more during the process, though we’re sure a certain amount of blundering will always be a part of what we do – it’s charming, right?

For those of you just tuning in, we wanted to let you know that our next podcast (airing on Dec 3rd) will be our book club discussion of Marina Endicott’s, The Little Shadows!

Marina Endicott is an Edmonton author with many accolades and we’re very much looking forward to reading her newest book now that it’s in paperback. As Tania is a big fan of everything vaudevillian and circus-y, she really wanted to give this book a read! We recommend you head straight away to your local bookstore or library and get this book read before Dec 3rd. Please do take part in our discussions on twitter, facebook, or goodreads (feel free to add discussion threads of your very own). For more info on Marina and her books, check our her website: http://marinaendicott.com/

From the back cover:
The Little Shadows follows three sisters into the backstage world of Polite Vaudeville before and during the First World War. Overseen by their fond but barely coping Mama, the sisters (Aurora, Clover and joyous, headstrong Bella) set out to make their living as a singing act after the untimely death of their father. With little in their favour save youth and hope, the sisters navigate their way to adulthood among a cast of extraordinary charmers, charlatans, ruffians and impresarios—and once in a rare while, a true star with transcendent gifts. From the brightly lit stage into the little shadows that lurk behind the curtain, the art of vaudeville—in all its variety, madness, melodrama, hilarity and sorrow—echoes the art of life itself.

If you like The Little Shadows, we recommend these titles:
The Night Circus by Erin  Morgenstern
Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters
Geek Love by Katherine Dunn
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

For kids:
The Wonder Show by Hannah Barnaby
The Boneshaker by Kate Milford

Do you have any circus-y or vaudevillian reads to recommend to us? Leave them here on our many social media pages!

Taschen has an awesome photography book out about the circus. Amazing photos from the history of the circus. I believe, in true Taschen fashion, it is called “Circus”.
